ZusammenfassungIn this talk which is planned for 60 minutes duration, as a mathematician I would like to discuss for the computer scientists, the role of harmonic analysis on groups in coding theory over algebraic curves.
The problem of counting the number of rational points of an algebraic curve over a finite field is of importance in arithmetic and coding theory. A special class of curves known as modular curves play important role in the study of elliptic curves and so in coding theory. Modular curves are defined by group theoretical devices and for this reason methods from analysis on groups can be applied to count the number of points over certain finite fields for such curves.
We wish to try to explain the ideas in as much as simple language possible, but some knowledge of number theory and group theory is indispensable.
